One of the first locations in Blaize and the Maven is Blaize’s adopted home, an island in the south of Thailand. Although Blaize was born elsewhere, and is, like the majority of energetics, adaptable about human nationality and culture, she was brought up from a young age by her Uncle Marius and Aunt Fai on the island.
I’ve been living in Thailand for the last few years, since I first took a break from working in consultancy in London a few years ago to travel – and never went back. I fell in love with the country, so it was natural to include it as one of the locations in my first novel.
I’ve lived both in the north of Thailand, in the more mountainous Chiang Mai, and the south of Thailand on one of the islands. On the latter, I hung out attending yoga classes, writing, and commuting to other countries to continue working as an independent consultant.
Life on the island was beautiful, as you’ll see from my photo here. I saw more amazing sunsets than I probably have in the rest of my life put together. I swung in a hammock reading my book, and I worked in small coffee shops while travellers flip-flopped there way past on their way to the beach. I learned to drive a scooter on the island, finally overcoming my fears on this after several false starts, and driving gently along the beach road in the late evening, with the smell of jasmine surrounding me, and a cool breeze cutting through the heat, was one of my most treasured pleasures.
